SCRATCH BUILD: Minefield Markers

I’ve been working through the list of things to do for my Sword Beach game before the 79th anniversary, and thought knocking up some minefield markers would be a quick job.

I wanted these to be usable for Battlegroup (where you place marker to signify a minefield in the middle of the minefield) and for other rules, so used a 20mm square mdf base as a starter.

Wanting something a little more subtle than a ‘Minen’ sign, I dug out the remaining Teller mines I picked up from Scalefiend Miniatures before Christmas. I used most of them on the Hemmbalken log ramp beach obstacles as you can read about here on Wargame Despatches but luckily I had 5 left. Slight problem as I wanted 6 markers so I got creative!

Vallejo pumice and a dab of PVA to secure the mines. I created a shallow crater in the sixth one to signify an exploded mine.
Once dried, hit with a black rattle can primer.
Base coat of Vallejo US Field Drab
Heavy drybrush with Vallejo Light Mud.
Very light drybrush with Ivory to pick out the details.
Next up, I painted the wooden post in my usual Vallejo New Wood, then Old Wood, followed with Agrax Earthshade. Crater has an Agrax wash too. Teller mines have been painted with AK Field Grey Base.
Nuln Oil applied to the Teller mines to give some depth to the details.
Flocked with Geek Gaming Scenics Green Mix, and they’re ready for the table!

So there we go, a quick half a dozen minefield markers done in less than an hour all told. These should look good – while being fairly subtle – marking the minefields behind Sword Beach, and for other games too.
