1/72 PSC Humber Armoured Car

This is one of those blog posts that has been sat in my drafts for far too long!

Last July I shared a post about the new PSC Humber release. Once they came out I picked up a box and built two of the three kits.

As stated on the PSC website:

This hard plastic kit contains 3 vehicles with 6 commander figures and has options to build either Mk.II or Mk. IV variants.

The kit very much reminded me of the old Hasegawa kit (in a good way!), the parts all fit well and there’s no flash – as you’d expect for a newly released kit.

Sprue for the PSC 1/72 Humber Armoured Car. Each box contains 3 sprues.

Now there are some challenges with this kit. The instructions on the back of the box aren’t the best, so it’s well worth checking out the zoomable instructions here. It’s also not clear from the instructions where some of the parts go, though nothing a web search of the real vehicle won’t solve.

Also if you’re building a later model, you’ll likely want to fix the spare tyre to the side of the hull. No chance with this kit as it won’t fit.

For the purists this is likely to be an issue, for me it was a pain but I’ve built them to play with! anyway!

Here we have the finished two models, which I’ve completed to represent vehicles from 3rd and 43rd Divisional Reconnaissance Regiments. More on those in a later post!

Decals are mainly Dan Taylor Modelworks, with others from the decals box.

These are really nice Dave! :-) I can remember building the Matchbox Humber when it was released a very, very long time ago. I’ve got two late Humbers to paint but mine are 3D prints from Badger Prints – one comes “clean” and the other one comes stowed, although I think they’re fractionally too large!

I’ve got a quick question if that’s OK (I know you’re busy prepping for D-Day)! For mid-1944 vehicles and AFVs how do you decide whether to use SCC2 brown or SCC15 green? I get the impression British built equipment could be either in that time frame, but US-supplied vehicles are likely to be in either US Olive Drab or SCC15 (the latter more likely for Fireflies, Achilles and the like). I’m only asking because I have a plan to do some vehicles for the Italian theatre in 44/45.

Yes I built the matchbox kit too, back in probably the 80’s? Great question on the SCC2 or SCC15. US supplied kit was left in Olive drab unless there was time to repaint or unless major conversion work eg Sherman Flail tank. I tend to prefer SCC15 so most of my stuff gets painted in that. However I wanted to try out the brown to have easily recognisable RASC units.
I’ve also painted a pair of Centaurs in SCC2 brown for 5 RMASB on Sword. The decals are testing my patience though 😉
In summary British kit could be either brown or SCC15 depending on what it is, US supplied kit in OD or SCC15 if converted. I read somewhere recently, that the newer kit was likely to be deployed early in the Normandy campaign, but as the campaign wore on replacement stocks were brought out which could have been recent new kit or something older – especially soft skins. Can of worms…!

Thanks for taking the time to to answer my question, Dave, that’s much appreciated! :-) I’m planning on doing some Italian theatre Brits so I’ll probably mix and match. I’ll do a couple of Churchills in SCC2 and leave them unmarked so that I can use them for the Russians as well, other stuff could be in either colour but I’ve got a pair of Priest Kangaroos that will probably be SCC15.
