WATERLOO 1815 CAMPAIGN: Hanoverians, Part 2

Well I’ve dusted off the brushes and made another effort to test out a colour scheme and style I’ll be happy with!

Key for me is to achieve a table top standard that looks ok at arms length – so I’m not aiming to bring out every little detail. (Let’s see how long that lasts…)

In August last year I’d tested out some Vallejo Xpress paints, and while they didn’t quite work for me on the Hanoverian test figure here, they’ve come out well on two battalions of French line in greatcoats. Once they’re based I’ll share some more on those figures. But, for now, let’s get back to some Red Coats!

So with these two figures I’ve primed them with a light grey rattle can and then given them a 2:1 black wash to water ratio wash. Once the wash dried overnight I’ve then blocked in the main colours, followed by one highlight. The metalwork got a Nuln Oil wash, and the skin areas a light Reikland Flesh Wash.

There wasn’t a lot of difference in the time taken to paint these compared to the Xpress paints, but the colours are more vibrant. This, I feel, is quite important with 18mm figures. I’ll crack on with this scheme for now, but may try out using Xpress colours as the base coat and then highlight with standard acrylics as my next trial and error.

So two down, approximately 150 Hanoverians, 150 Brunswickers, and 250 British to go. Though I’m tempted to put together a Dutch Brigade and a KGL Brigade too.
